Stepping into a new environment can be daunting for anyone. But for freshmen who are the first in their families to attend college, that first semester may be particularly challenging. First-generation college student Nicolas Rankin knows these challenges first-hand.

Of the 8,000+ undergraduate students who enrolled at SDSU’s Fowler College of Business during the fall semester in 2025, 923 of them were new transfer students. Michael Ruso was one of those students.
