SMBA Student Discusses Bringing More Diversity to Hockey

April 7, 2021

Sports MBA student Gian Bajwa (SMBA '21) was recently featured on a segment on Hockey Night in Canada: Punjabi Edition in which he discussed his career goal of bringing more diversity to the sport of hockey in North America.

When asked how he could improve the situation for young hockey players, Bajwa points to education and training. "I think it starts with the coaching and developmental staffs being able to work with kids who feel like they don't belong."

Bajwa is a native of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Waterloo. He enrolled in the SDSU Sports MBA program with the specific goal of landing an opportunity post-MBA with a hockey organization. To complete the requirements of the MBA, Bajwa joined the Pittsburgh Penguins organization as a Corporate Partnerships intern alongside classmate and fellow Canadian, Whitney Hamilton (SMBA '21). The two were recently profiled on the Sports MBA website for a "Day in the Life" series that explores graduate student internships.

Bajwa will graduate from the SDSU Sports MBA program in May and look to work in hockey in a role that helps diversify the game he loves and give more opportunities to those who feel marginalized without the youth ranks.

"As a sports MBA student at San Diego State University and intern with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Gian hopes to use his experiences to help kids like him reach their fullest potential."

The SDSU Sports MBA program wishes to applaud Gian Bajwa on his upcoming graduation and his recent national recognition on one of Canada's top hockey television programs.
