Fowler Students, Professor Invited to Charles Schwab Investment Advisor Conference
SDSU Finance Professor David Nanigian
Multinational financial services company, Charles Schwab, has invited four students and one faculty member from the Fowler College of Business at San Diego State University to attend the company’s IMPACT 2020 conference, scheduled for October 27 – 28, 2020. It will be the first time the conference will be held in a virtual format.
IMPACT 2020 is Schwab’s premier conference for registered investment advisors to learn about issues such as the effect of cybersecurity threats, attracting new clients, and the challenges facing the industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic. SDSU was one of only 18 universities from across the U.S. whose students and faculty representatives were invited to attend the conference.
This year, the Dr. Thomas Warschauer Endowed Professor of Finance, David Nanigian, along with SDSU students Joseph Schaaf (senior, financial services), Kyle Farmer (senior, financial services), April Schultz (senior, financial services) and Caleb Chen (MSBA, Financial and Tax Planning Program) will join the virtual conference and sessions to network with firms and investment advisors.
The students will not only have the opportunity to attend virtual sessions, but they are also invited to upload their resumes and attend a virtual career fair, which runs from November 9 – 10.
“I had the privilege of attending IMPACT last year and, in my view, it is unequivocally the best conference for personal financial planners to attend to enhance and update their knowledge on investment management,” said Nanigian. “I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to bring four of my hard-working students to this year's IMPACT conference."
Here’s what our students are saying:
"I’m very excited to attend this conference! What I’m most looking forward to learning about at this conference is how many experts in the field see the industry transitioning and evolving when the world returns to normal after the pandemic is over. I hope to be able to ask questions such as how we, as students, can better prepare ourselves to enter the industry in such evolving times. I’m also interested in meeting a lot of new faces from RIA’s all around the country, and it will be very fascinating to learn how they all operate in their own unique ways. Hopefully I’m able to pick up a mentor or two along the way." – Kyle Farmer, Senior, Financial Services
"I'm deeply honored and thrilled for the opportunity. IMPACT has always done a fantastic job inviting well-respected industry leaders as their speakers; and from what they've announced, this year is no exception. Besides rewarding educational events, IMPACT also attracts great talents across the nation including many financial professionals and students from other elite institutions. This would be a terrific opportunity for us to connect with them, and for them to learn more about the financial planning program at SDSU as well." – Caleb Chen, MSBA, Financial & Tax Planning Program
"With the incredible opportunity to attend the IMPACT 2020 conference, I am excited to hear insights from industry leaders and network with top RIA firms. I know that the invaluable knowledge provided by this year’s speakers related to current economic conditions, trends in the industry, and the future of financial planning will be a wonderful compliment to my financial services degree at SDSU. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy as well as on everyday life will create challenges and opportunities in the future. I strive to understand what firms are choosing to do in reaction to this, and what they will do to best serve their clients in these times. Finally, I am interested in learning the steps financial advisors take in order to create and nurture meaningful relationships with their clients, and to help their clients reach their financial and life goals through financial planning." – April Schultz, Senior, Financial Services
"Financial planning centers around serving and guiding clients throughout their lives and making sure they have the financial support required to achieve their goals. This requires not only the technical side of planning but also the service side as well. Events such as Schwab’s IMPACT conference provide a comprehensive look into the industry from extremely successful and respected professionals. Upon graduating from SDSU I want to be the best financial advisor I can possibly be, and by providing opportunities such as Schwab’s IMPACT conference SDSU is making that dream a reality." – Joseph Schaaf, Senior, Financial Services
