SMBA '26 Student Experiences the Power of Adaptive Sport

On Saturday morning at La Jolla Shores, SMBA '26 student Melissa Schueller participated in an Adaptive Surf Clinic hosted by the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), an organization dedicated to expanding access to sport for athletes with physical disabilities through adaptive equipment, expert coaching, and a strong community.

For Melissa, the clinic marked her first time surfing in the ocean since losing her arm. It was a milestone she had been eagerly anticipating. Sitting on her board while waiting for the next wave, she found a sense of calm she hadn't expected.

Working alongside professional coaches, Melissa learned the techniques needed to adapt her balance and positioning on the board. With encouragement and expert guidance, she quickly gained confidence. By her third wave, she was standing.

The moment represented far more than successfully riding a wave. It was proof that with the right support, opportunities that once seemed out of reach can become possible again.

Throughout the morning, volunteers worked alongside every athlete, offering encouragement, celebrating progress, and creating an environment where everyone felt supported.

The clinic demonstrated the power of adaptive sport to bring people together and create moments that extend far beyond the water. For Melissa, it marked not only a return to surfing but also a powerful reminder that the sports community is strongest when everyone has the chance to participate.
