The Farmers Insurance Open always helps Sports MBA tee off the spring semester in a big way. With the additional role of media center support this year, SMBA ’26 students were able to extend their support for the tournament for the entire week. Several students were hired for ticket service and events roles with Century Club of San Diego, working alongside SMBA alumni Gaelen Kepics (SMBA ’23) and Haley Kachigan (SMBA ’22). SMBA ’26 supported Farmers with other roles familiar to the program as well, like entrance ambassadors and social caddies.

SMBA ’26 visited Torrey Pines Golf Course the week prior to tournament for an exclusive orientation led by Century Club. Students heard from CEO Marty Gorsich, Executive VP of Communications & Community Affairs Jennifer Cota, and the partner relations and marketing teams with the course as the backdrop. The cohort learned about the tournament’s background, negotiations required to execute the event on the city course, the mission of the Century Club, and networking tips and advice heading into tournament week.

Current students, Jaxen Trinidad and Sophie Francis reflected on their Farmers experience below:

“I am so grateful to Marty Gorsich and the rest of the Century Club of San Diego for the opportunity to volunteer at the Farmers Insurance Open. I was able to assist in the media center (including getting to sit in on Brooks Koepka’s first press conference back in the PGA Tour), assist fans directly as a ticketing and entrance ambassador, and capture content for the FIO social media team. I loved the opportunity to go behind the ropes and see everything that goes into putting on such a large-scale event!” - Sophie Francis (SMBA '26)

“As a lifelong golf fan, being able to work inside the ropes at the Farmers Insurance Open and see firsthand what it takes to deliver a world-class event was the highlight of my professional experience in sports. As the Coordinator for Golf Events, I learned from an incredible team while supporting the planning and execution of the Pro-Am, Honorary Observer program, and other tournament operations. I loved every minute of it, it never felt like work, but an opportunity to be part of something I care deeply about and continue growing within the golf industry. A huge thank you to the SDSU Sports MBA program for connecting me with Marty, and to Marty for trusting me with this opportunity and helping me take meaningful steps toward my dream.” -Jaxen Trinidad (SMBA '26)

The annual PGA Tour stop provides an undeniable community and economic impact for San Diego, with a spike in tourism where golf enthusiasts and casual lifestyle fans alike get to enjoy the iconic course and sunny weather. This year marked the exit of Farmers Insurance as the title sponsor after 17 years, and it felt like a storybook ending with a historical win by Justin Rose shooting 23-under with perfect weather all week at Torrey. While the direction of the tournament awaits the FCC’s plans, we’re excited for the possibilities and our continued support at the event. A special thank you to Marty Gorsich, Jennifer Cota, Michelle Eifler, Grace Hicks, Emery Shaw, Gaelen Kepics, Haley Kachigan, BZA PR, and the entire Century Club team! ‘Til next time at Torrey!
