Lending a Hand at the Genesis Invitational

February 18, 2025

Last weekend, SMBA '25 lent a hand with the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines Golf Course. The PGA Tour Signature Event is usually hosted at The Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, but was relocated to San Diego this year due to the devastating LA wildfires. The event was a true testament of the power of community coming together, with various groups working together to ensure the successful execution of the tournament.

Student volunteers helped in the entrance ambassador role, where they welcomed attendees upon arrival, assisted with ticket services, helped answer questions and promoted “must see” areas and activations on the course. Some of those activations included a closest-to-the-pin golf simulator competition hosted by Genesis and a mobile 2K25 PGA Tour truck that advertised the new video game.

The tournament host, the TGR Foundation, and title sponsor, Genesis, collaborated throughout the tournament on a wildfire relief charitable drive called "California Rises,” which raised over $8 million for the cause.

As for the play, it was a competitive event that came down to the wire, ultimately crowning Swedish phenom Ludvig Åberg champion in its 99th edition. Tournament host and golf legend Tiger Woods was in attendance on Sunday to watch the final round and present Åberg the trophy.

It was another great event in the San Diego sports community that Sports MBA was honored to be a part of. A huge thank you to Dora Seggelke, the TGR Foundation, and the Century Club of San Diego for giving us the opportunity to gain valuable volunteer and sports event experience!
