Where the Turf Meets the Surf

As part of his Financial Accounting course, Dr. David DeBoskey takes Sports MBA students on a field trip to the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club for a day at the races during the Bing Crosby Season of horse racing in November. 

Students study the financial statements of the track and the organization that operates the annual racing seasons and occasional mega-events like the Breeders’ Cup. Once on-site, Dr. DeBoskey explains the particulars of pari-mutuel betting and takes a deep dive into favorites and long-shots and what factors are at play behind the scenes of wagering on horses.
