Reflections from SDSU Black Business Society on Black History Month

February 25, 2025

by Kaitlyn Nim

This month, we asked members of the SDSU Black Business Society to share their perspectives on the significance of Black History Month and what it means to them.  Here's what our business student leaders had to say:

Leah Brunson, Senior President

"Black History Month is important because it is a time to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of our ancestors and those who came before us. It serves as a reminder of the resilience, innovation, and excellence of Black people in every sector of life. For me, Black history is a testament to the strength of African Americans—their ability to overcome adversity, break barriers, and shape the world in meaningful ways. It’s not just about honoring the past but also about using that history as inspiration to continue striving for progress and creating a lasting impact."

Brenna Barnes, Sophomore  Co-Events Coordinator

"Black History is important to me because as a community this is a month where we can celebrate our culture, heritage, and ancestors. For a long time, the Black Community wasn't able to outwardly be proud of who they were, for a plethora of reasons. Now is a time where we can show our pride for our culture. It's also a time where we can shed light on some important events and people who have shaped America."

Deja Eliason, Senior  CBC Representative & Internal Relations

"To me, Black History Month is an opportunity for education, reflection, and celebration. It’s a time to acknowledge the often-overlooked voices and stories that have shaped history. It encourages conversations about equity, inclusion, and the importance of diversity in all aspects of society. More than just a month, it’s a call to continue learning, uplifting, and advocating for progress year-round."

Jah’Ron Mitchell, Junior  VP of Marketing

"Black History Month is significant because it is a time to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments, tenacity, and contributions of Black people across time. It honors our historical hardships and sacrifices while simultaneously highlighting the advancements we are still making. I see Black History Month as an opportunity to live out the victories of my ancestors, to continue their legacy, and to demonstrate that no matter where you come from, we are capable of overcoming obstacles and shattering racial barriers. The goal I see for myself as a young black man in America is to break stereotypes, redefine success, and achieve greatness while remaining true to identify. During Black History Month, I also have the opportunity to consider how resilient and strong my own family is. My great-grandfather lived through one of the most important historical moments—the Pearl Harbor attack. The courage, tenacity, and unwavering spirit that are deeply rooted in my bloodline are demonstrated by his survival. I am reminded by his story that I have a family of fighters—people who took on hardship head-on and never gave up. He persevered and lived to share his story, and I do the same in all I do, demonstrating that I will always rise above the challenges and leave my own mark on history. Being able to share my story—one of development, resiliency, and boundless potential—and experiencing things that many people who look like me might never have the opportunity to is what I see as a tribute to endurance. I am reminded throughout Black History Month of my progress, my future, and the fact that I am a living example of Black excellence."

Kyra Shambourger, Sophomore  CBC Representative

"Black History Month is important to me because it celebrates the contributions, achievements, and experiences of Black people that are often overlooked. It is a time to honor those who made major contributions and fought for the rights and equality of Black people. I feel a deep sense of pride in the community I’m a part of and the meaningful connections I’ve made."

CBC Representative

Kelsea Thomas, Junior  Events Coordinator & Chair of Decorations

"Black History Month is important because it highlights a community in America that spent so long oppressed, laughed at, and taken advantage of. Everyone who has sacrificed to advance the Black community's quality of life and opportunities deserves nothing but the utmost respect and honor throughout and beyond this month. Black History Month is not only a time to reflect on the past but to celebrate Black excellence in all fields—education, politics, science, business, the arts, and beyond. It is an opportunity for everyone to learn, acknowledge, and uplift Black voices, ensuring that their stories and impact are never forgotten."
