Student Organization Spotlight: Women in Business
Several members of the Women in Business executive board handed out free cookies to members checking in for the Career Panel they hosted with industry professionals from Snapchat, PepsiCo, Fidelity, and more!
In honor of Women’s History Month, the Fowler College of Business is highlighting Women in Business (WIB), a student organization that is helping our students develop skills and gain experience that will benefit them in the business industry. WIB offers professional workshops, network opportunities, and career panels. Setareh Sterling (Senior, Management), President of Women in Business, describes how WIB helps future leaders prepare to enter the professional world, find campus involvement opportunities, and more!
About Women in Business
Q: What are the goals of your organization?
Our goals are to empower future female leaders and businesswomen to be confident in
their talent, take up space in the professional world, and do big things. There is
no member cap or member requirements because we believe every woman should be able
to partake in the incredible network we have built.
Q: Why should students join your organization?
We provide an inclusive, intersectional space for women interested in developing themselves
both personally and professionally to connect with other like-minded women, learn
valuable skills, and build lasting relationships. As the biggest business organization
on campus with over 500+ members, we have a vast network of both active members and
alumni that have gone on to work for companies like Adobe, GoSite, Amazon, Complex,
Fenty Beauty, and more! We are here to support you every step of the way and help
you land your next internship or job.
Q: What events, gatherings, and activities does your organization host?
We host professional and personal development workshops, such as our recent expert-led
elevator pitch workshop and upcoming interview workshop, as well as socials and collaborations
with other on-campus organizations like the SDSU American Marketing Association. We
also partner with the Fowler College of Business on the Annual Women in Leadership Conference each year. This year’s event will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2022.
Q: When does your organization meet?
We meet every other Tuesday at 6 p.m. in SHW11 starting on February 8th. If you’re
unable to attend, all you must do is let us know and we can provide a virtual option!

Q: How does your organization connect with the community outside of SDSU?
This semester we are more dedicated than ever to including philanthropy in our semester
activities. We intend on working closely with various organizations like the Surfrider
Foundation to enact positive change in our community, and we hope you’ll join us!
Our goal is to reach 150 tracked service hours for the spring semester.
Q: How can a student get involved with your organization?
By submitting both the short membership application that allows us to track membership
and serve our members better and the small semester fee of $15 which helps us fund
socials, workshops, and guest speakers, every student from any major is welcome to
join us on the journey to self-betterment and success! Our late membership deadline
for this semester was March 8 at 11:59 pm, but we hope you will join us in the fall!
Q: What are your organization’s social media handles?
Our website is www.sdsuwib.org. You can also find us on Instagram @sdsuwib, which always has our most up to date information and reminders!
Q: Anything else you’d like to add about your organization.
I personally know how intimidating it can feel to do something new but taking the
first step is the hardest. If you can get past that, you can achieve all the incredible
things we know you are capable of and Women in Business is here to support you the
entire way! With over 500 active members and growing, we have the biggest business
organization on campus and the strongest sisterhood there is, and we hope to meet
you soon!
Q&A with Women in Business President, Setareh Sterling
Setareh Sterling, President of Women in Business, was on the 2021 Homecoming Court.
Q: As a student leader involved with an organization at SDSU, can you share why you got involved and what your experience has been like so far?
As a transfer student that came to SDSU during the height of the pandemic, I was desperate
to find different things I could be involved in to help me feel more connected to
campus despite being stuck on Zoom. That is what initially led me to join Women in
Business, since it was the only organization that sparked excitement, and from there,
I continued getting involved in different things after realizing how much more fulfilling
college is when you have these experiences! My experience has been truly life-changing
and so incredible, I never take it for granted.
Q: Are you involved in any other organizations on campus?
I am! Besides my Presidency with Women in Business, I am also the Philanthropy Chair
for Mortar Board Honor Society and arrange monthly philanthropy events for our members
to give back to our surrounding community.
Q: What experience with your organization has been the most impactful so far?
Hearing directly from our members how much Women in Business has helped them successfully
land internships or jobs in their desired field is an incredibly special feeling.
As the leader of such a large organization with so much growth, I am always concerned
with making continuous improvement, so it is extremely meaningful hearing how we have
brought value to our members and continue to do so semester after semester.
Q: What has been your favorite event you’ve attended at SDSU? Why?
My favorite event I’ve attended was the Homecoming Game last semester, although it
didn’t technically take place at SDSU like it normally would. This is my favorite
event so far because I had the massive honor of representing our organization as a
Homecoming Court nominee!
Q: Why is getting involved on campus important to you?
Campus involvement and community are what set your individual college apart from anywhere else. When you think back on your college experience, you won’t remember sitting in class, you’ll think of all the organizations you participated in and the relationships you built along the way - so make time for it!

Q: What is the best advice you have received during your time at SDSU?
Trust the process! No one has it all figured out, even the people you look up to.
Q: What is the best advice you have for future Fowler College of Business students?
Get as involved as you can while you’re here because there are so many invaluable opportunities open to us as Fowler students, such as the Lavin Entrepreneurship Program, ZIP Launchpad, and Career Management Center!
Q: Are you involved in any internship opportunities?
I am currently a Marketing Intern, with three other incredibly talented women, working to support the 6th annual Women in Leadership Conference that is hosted by the Fowler College of Business in partnership with Women in Business. It takes place this week on March 10 in Montezuma Hall and is free to all majors and students, so come check it out!
Q: What are your plans following graduation?
After graduation, I plan on taking some time for myself and traveling abroad before
beginning full-time employment!
Q: What career aspirations do you have following your time at SDSU?
Originally, I planned on continuing to pursue project management within the technology or renewable energy sectors, but after being admitted to ZIP Launchpad and working tirelessly with my co-founders, I am hopeful that our start-up will occupy me full-time.
