In an effort to bring some relief to students, faculty, and staff ahead of finals week, the Fowler College of Business hosted two virtual events: PAWS & De-stress Fowler Pet Party on December 9 and a Mindfulness & Self-Connection Workshop on December 10.
Both events focused on reducing attendees’ anxiety and stress that often occurs in advance of finals week - especially in 2020. Students, faculty, and staff alike enjoyed meeting adorable pets, learning new mindfulness practices, and engaging in self-care.
PAWS & De-stress Fowler Pet Party
Kafka, labradoodle of Professor Aaron Elkins, attended the Pet Party.
At the PAWS & De-stress Fowler Pet Party, attendees brought an amazing variety of pet pals while sharing stories about their pet with the group. Student organization leaders Alek Casillas and Josh McFaul guided the discussion and served as the event hosts. They also shared the many physical and mental health benefits pet owners can gain from a decrease in blood pressure and cholesterol to an increase in self esteem.
A few of the local rescue organizations that were mentioned include:
Mindfulness & Self-Connection Workshop
Dr. Sunaina Chugani Marquez
The Mindfulness & Self-Connection Workshop led by assistant professor Dr. Sunaina Chugani Marquez was also a valuable event for all students, faculty, and staff across the college and university. Attendees learned simple techniques and exercises to improve mental clarity in order to cultivate mental peace and balance before the busy finals season. One of these exercises included a guided meditation led by Dr. Marquez that enabled participants to relax and connect with their bodies.
She encouraged attendees to adopt a daily practice or mindfulness cue unique to them that would allow for recurring moments of mindfulness in simple ways. Dr. Marquez also shared various resources with the attendees including a feelings and needs list for non-violent communication as well as her podcast, titled The Happy Wanderers, which focuses on finding joy and compassion.
