Doak Walker Award semifinalist Lucky Sutton says his SDSU business education has given him the confidence and skills to launch his own company after his football career.
To SDSU football fans, Aztec running back Lucky Sutton is an essential force behind the team’s high-powered offense.
Off the field, Sutton is a business student at the Fowler College of Business, where he’s taken skills he’s learned on the field — discipline, teamwork and leadership — and applied them to his classroom lessons as he builds a foundation for his post-football career.
“SDSU has prepared me for life after football by giving me opportunities to build real skills in business,” said Sutton, who is now in his junior year. “Between the academic experience and the support system offered at SDSU, I feel confident stepping into the business world and pursuing my goals after football.”
Those goals include founding his own company — potentially focused on real estate investment, a field he’s become increasingly interested in as he progresses through his coursework.
As the Aztecs close out one of their most successful seasons in recent memory, Sutton’s leadership has been as valuable to the team as his on-field performance. It also sets the tone for younger players on the team, and he hopes to bring that same mindset to his professional life once he hangs up his cleats.
“As a business student, I’ve gained an understanding of everything from the fundamentals of management and finance to developing strong communication skills,” said Sutton. “But the most valuable thing I learned in the classroom is how to make informed, strategic decisions that will guide me now and into the future.”
With his athletic accomplishments and his solid academic foundation, Sutton is preparing not just for his next game but for his next chapter.
