An Inspiring Week of Guest Speakers

SMBA '26 with Intuit Guest Speakers
Last week, students heard from an incredible lineup of guest speakers who shared common themes in their messages, reminding them of the importance of authenticity, staying passionate about the work you do, and recognizing the personal sacrifices that come with building a career in the always busy sports industry.

*Intuit: Christian Deleon & Conner Comp – Shared how teamwork and strategic thinking guide their work to 1) showcase Intuit being a tech-forward business, 2) drive awareness for the cornerstone brands, and 3) leave a legacy in the community (currently through initiatives like financial literacy and small business entrepreneurship programs with high school students), and maximize their partnership with the LA Clippers.

*Jaleen Roberts via Parity - A Paralympic track and field medalist and proud mental health advocate, Jaleen spoke to students right before catching a flight to India for the 2025 World Para Athletic Championships where she went on to win Bronze in the Women’s Long Jump T37.  She inspired students with her story of perseverance and resilience, speaking openly about her journey with cerebral palsy and bipolar disorder. She hopes to continue to use her platform to raise awareness and educate others, inspiring young athletes to thrive as their authentic selves. A group of students will follow up with Jaleen on ideas for branding, curating her story, and collaboration opportunities.

*Marty Gorsich, Farmers Insurance Open (Century Club of San Diego) – Shared his journey from the Padres’ team store to leading the Farmers Insurance Open, speaking transparently about both the rewards and personal sacrifices of a career in sports. He encouraged students to pursue the industry with passion, conviction and meaning, while pointing out key considerations he has learned through his experience. Marty encouraged students to keep focused on their “North Star” and knowing their personal differentiator when building your brand. Students even had the opportunity to apply to a few roles at the upcoming PGA tournament.

*CAA Sports Panel: Sammy Ross, Property Sales Executive, Tasha Getten, Basketball Agent, Jack Upton, Global Brand Consulting Executive – This group was the personification of charisma and authenticity, making it clear how key strong relationships are to their success in the agency world. Tasha, Jack, and Sammy collectively highlighted the importance of saying “yes” early in your career, building and maintaining real relationships, putting your nose to the grindstone, and recognizing authenticity as a superpower. Their most memorable stories were both fun and inspiring. This session was filled with smiles & laughter, and enthusiasm & honesty.

*Steve Becvar, SDSU Athletics (Aztec Club) – Shared his sports background, which
included lessons from launching a professional team in a new market, and community
impact, speaking from the heart about his deep connection and commitment to raising
awareness for ALS, a cause near and dear to SDSU as it has impacted SDSU Men's Basketball Assistant Coach, Mark Fisher.

Sports MBA is grateful to each of these sports leaders for an exciting week in the program and their insights!
