Accounting professor Steve Gill was honored with the 2025 Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Faculty Contributor for the Fowler College of Business. Gill, who also serves as an assistant dean in SDSU’s College of Graduate Studies, received his award during the all-university convocation held on August 21.
The Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Faculty Contributor is regarded as one of the university’s most prestigious faculty honors and is presented on an annual basis to one faculty member from each of SDSU’s seven academic colleges.
After working in Big 4 firms and as a corporate executive, Gill shifted his career path to academia after earning his Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He joined the Charles W. Lamden School of Accountancy in 2008, and since then, has made significant contributions to the school, the college and the university.
While serving as Fowler’s director of graduate programs, Gill was instrumental in the establishment of two new graduate degree programs and major curriculum updates to the college’s MBA program. He also served as the college’s director of assessment, where he led the college through two successful AACSB cycles.
As an expert in taxation, Gill has published numerous academic articles and was the sole author and co-author of several widely used textbooks on the subject. Additionally, Gill stepped up to lead SDSU’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program on an emergency basis due to the sudden passing of the program’s founder in March 2015, and he continued to manage the VITA program for several years afterward.
Gill has been the recipient of numerous awards previously, including the Allan Bailey Service Award (2018), Fowler’s Outstanding Faculty Contribution Award (2011 and 2016), and has been named Most Influential Faculty Member by the Charles W. Lamden School of Accountancy’s top student (2021 and 2025).
“Steve Gill has built a legacy of developing innovative educational programs, publishing meaningful research, and providing outstanding leadership throughout his career at SDSU,” said Dan Moshavi, Thomas and Evelyn Page Dean of the Fowler College of Business. “Steve’s contributions have had a profoundly positive impact on our students, fellow faculty members and the university.”
