After earning a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Mumbai in her native India, Sakshi Dudhal chose to study abroad to earn her master’s degree. After some careful deliberation, she chose to attend SDSU’s Fowler College of Business, where she will earn her Master of Science in Information Systems (MSIS) in May.

Dudhal worked as a student assistant in the university’s Office for Graduate Life and Diversity and as a data analyst intern for the San Diego office of a national real estate investment trust (REIT). Her internship recently turned into a full-time post-graduation job offer.

She said it was the resources and faculty at SDSU that helped launch her toward a successful future.

Q: What prompted you to apply to SDSU for your master’s degree program?
A: I was considering studying in Canada, Germany or the U.S. and I created a short list of universities from each country to consider the pros and cons. I was initially drawn to SDSU after speaking to international students and alumni who discussed the university’s welcoming environment, and I found the on-campus job opportunities and the MSIS program was a perfect fit for me. Also, San Diego’s amazing weather was a huge plus.

Q: Do you have a favorite SDSU professor or experience that has inspired you?
A: David Goldberg is one of my favorite professors. He explained things in a way that just clicked with me. And he always pushes you to aim higher, while being there to catch you if you fall. I also have to mention Congcong Zheng who helped me figure out which classes to take and which ones to prioritize. Her guidance gave me so much peace of mind.

However, the one professor who has had the most impact on me is Carlos Paternina, especially as I work on my first-ever research paper. He has been a guiding light showing me exactly what my paper was missing and how to improve it. He didn’t just help me complete the paper, but inspired me to enjoy the process and to go beyond what I thought I was capable of.

Q: What are some of the tips and tricks you use to manage your time efficiently?
A: Balancing two part-time jobs and grad school wasn’t easy, but I realized that I couldn’t keep doing things on the fly. I needed structure.

So, I opened my calendar and started blocking time for work shifts, classes, assignments, and working on my research. Having everything laid out helped me to stay focused while taking care of myself, staying sane and moving forward without losing the joy of the journey.

Q: Were you able to find supportive resources at SDSU? How were they able to help you?
A:  The Graduate Life and Diversity Center made a huge difference for me. Their study lounge is where I met some of my first friends at SDSU. Their staff helped me get access to all the resources available to grad students — from events to academic support and more.

Also, the Commuter Resource Center had everything a student living off-campus might need, from comfy spots to study and rest, to lockers and microwave ovens. And the International Student Center was a lifesaver:  They’ve been there every step of the way, including helping me with my admission to SDSU and helping me get my F-1 work visa for my internship.

Q: Your internship has turned into a post-graduation job offer. How did your experience at SDSU prepare you for your future career?
A: At SDSU, I learned the importance of adaptability, continuous learning, and effective communication through the coursework, which also strengthened my analytical and problem-solving skills. Additionally, Fowler’s Career Services helped me to build a professional resume, refine job applications and establish valuable connections. Lastly, Isabel Martorell at SDSU’s International Student Center answered all my questions and offered the help I needed with the paperwork that secured my internship.

Q: Do you have any words of advice for other students who are nearing graduation?
A: Stay proactive, embrace challenges and never stop learning. Networking and mentors can help you find opportunities you might not have considered, and don’t be afraid of setbacks: They are just stepping stones to success.

Lastly, enjoy the journey, trust yourself and stay open to new possibilities.
