Ronda Sedillo, Former CFO of the San Diego Padres, Talks Leadership and Company Culture with SDSU Sports MBA Students
Students recently had the privilege of hearing from Ronda Sedillo, a seasoned finance executive with a wealth of experience, including serving as the CFO for the San Diego Padres. During her visit, Ronda shared insights into how culture is established and maintained within an organization, especially during times of change. Ronda emphasized that the tone of a company's culture is set at the top. Leadership plays a crucial role in shaping a strong culture, whether it is thriving or faltering. She explained that culture is not static; it is meant to evolve. She emphasized that good companies are those that adapt their cultures to the times, making necessary adjustments as they grow and face new challenges.
One great piece of advice the students received from Ronda was the importance of not panicking when there are shifts in leadership or cultural changes within a company. She encouraged students to give the culture a chance to evolve, as transitions can often lead to positive transformations in the workplace environment. Throughout her career, Ronda witnessed first-hand how leadership changes at the Padres impacted the team’s organizational culture. With her experience both in finance and in executive leadership, she provided students with a comprehensive understanding of how culture and business operations are heavily connected.
Ronda also took time to answer students' questions, offering advice on navigating the complexities of organizational culture in the business world. Her practical advice resonated deeply with the cohort, providing the cohort with tools that can be applied as students embark on their careers in sports business. The cohort would like to thank Ronda for taking the time to visit with the class, as well as Professor Mark Lindner for facilitating this engaging and educational session. Ronda's continued involvement with the program is a testament to her dedication to shaping the next generation of sports business leaders.
