Empowering Women at SDSU: Inside the Women in Business (WIB) Organization
by Kaitlyn Nim
As we celebrate Women’s History Month in March, the Fowler College of Business is proud to highlight the SDSU Women in Business (WIB) organization. With over 1100 active members, WIB is more than just a student organization—it’s a community dedicated to empowering and supporting women as they prepare to enter the professional world. Through career panels, networking opportunities, mentorship programs, and co-sponsored events like the upcoming Women in Leadership Conference on April 15, WIB continues to create a strong and supportive community for aspiring women professionals at SDSU. Co-Presidents Diana Ferreira and Iona Kallika share how WIB helps our future leaders prepare to enter the workplace, build connections with like-minded women, and host events that allow members to network and develop professional skills.
Q. Please share more about WIB and its career development initiatives.
Diana: WIB’s mission is to educate, empower, and connect women in their professional and social pursuits at SDSU. We aim to provide students with professional development, mentorship, and networking opportunities. WIB hosts various events to help our members grow professionally and build a strong community. From guest speaker panels featuring inspiring women in business to finance and resume workshops or fun social events to connect and unwind, there’s always something for everyone!
Q. What are some key benefits of joining WIB for students considering it?
Iona: Joining Women in Business can be a rewarding experience for students looking to develop their careers, grow their confidence, or just find a strong support system. Being a member provides students access to resume workshops, interview prep, and insight into what it takes to land a job in the business world.
Q. What are some of the most popular or impactful events that WIB hosts throughout the year?
Diana: We host many great events throughout the year, but some of the most impactful have been our guest speaker panels. We’ve had inspiring women from major companies like Sephora, Netflix, and Qualcomm share their career journeys and offer advice. Other events that have gained popularity with our members are our WIB Workouts–we love incorporating wellness into our community, and our Pilates session has been a favorite among members.

Q. What inspired you to get involved with WIB, and how has it shaped your time at SDSU?
Iona: I was inspired to join WIB because I wanted to be a part of a community that supports women in exploring their careers. Being a part of WIB has shaped my time at SDSU in many ways. It has given me confidence in my career path and invaluable leadership experience. Having the chance to plan big events, work with a team, and take on responsibilities has pushed me to grow. Also, being able to see our members grow and support each other is what makes this organization feel so special.
Q. Are there leadership or mentorship programs within WIB that help members grow professionally?
Diana: We offer a sister network mentorship program that pairs newer members with more experienced ones to help them navigate adjusting to college, exploring career paths, and building confidence in professional settings. It is a relatively new program, and we are working on expanding it to create more mentorship opportunities. Beyond that, we host a variety of workshops rooted in professional development that are open to all members.
Q. What advice would you give to aspiring business students?
Iona: My advice to aspiring business students is to get involved and take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there–building connections early on can open so many doors for you. It’s okay not to have everything figured out. College is a learning experience, and career paths can change. Focus on gaining new experiences and staying open to different opportunities instead of stressing about having the “perfect” plan.
