Lucas Dahl, President of The Real Estate Society
The Real Estate Society (RES) is a student-run organization within the Fowler College of Business dedicated to providing students with the essential tools, skills, knowledge and resources needed to successfully secure a position in the real estate industry following graduation.
The Fowler Corky McMillin Center for Real Estate (TCMCRE) works closely with the Real Estate Society to support the success of its members. TCMCRE plays a key role in organizing events, providing valuable resources, and fostering connections between students and industry professionals. One of its key initiatives isa mentorship program aimed at guiding students interested in real estate as they plan their careers. Advisory board member, Mark McMillin, has been instrumental in supporting these efforts, organizing impactful events and providing guidance.
Through the Real Estate Society, members gain exposure to a wide range of career opportunities in the San Diego real estate market. Lucas Dahl, a 3rd year Economics major and the current RES president, highlights various events, opportunities, and initiatives that the organization offers.
About the Real Estate Society (RES)
Q: What events, gatherings, and activities does your organization host?
At the Real Estate Society, we host industry professional speaker events, case studies and property tours, social events and bonfires, RES-exclusive career fairs, mentorship programs, and workshops.
Q: Why should students join your organization?
I would say that students should join this organization because of the immense amount of value it brings to every member through speaker events, case studies, networking events, career fairs, internship and job opportunities, mentorship programs, etc. But the real reason students should join is because there's incredible upside with no downside. Anyone can become a member, and anyone can come learn. We have cultivated these resources and relationships for you, and it is up to you to take them or pass upon them.
Q: What main initiatives/efforts does your organization value?
We believe in taking action, and in our organization, we empower students and equip them with the information and knowledge they need to take steps toward realizing their goals. Whether you are walking or sprinting toward your goals, at RES we believe in action and leveraging the opportunities you have within the walls of our organization to do so.
Q: What unique opportunities does RES offer that differ from other student organizations?
RES offers a pipeline to every student involved in the organization and has a molded pathway for members of any knowledge base and experience level. In our organization, you can go from a complete beginner—as I did—to learning a strong foundation about the industry, to potentially finding a mentor, to finding an internship, to finding a job. RES uniquely offers mobility to every student and their experience level. SDSU has great student organizations, although RES facilitates communication and brings people together better than any other organization on campus.
Q: How can a student get involved with your organization?
A student can go to our Instagram page (@RES.SDSU), navigate to the link in our bio, and apply to join our GroupMe.
Q&A with Lucas Dahl, Real Estate Society President
Q: What is the best advice you have for future Fowler College of Business students?
Take every opportunity this university has to offer you. It's all here for you to take advantage of during the short time you'll be attending. After pursuing enough opportunities over a long enough timeframe, your efforts will not only amalgamate into your desired outcomes, but you'll also likely find things you genuinely have a passion for. This is why you take opportunities—not exclusively to enjoy the fruits of your labor, but to learn your life's task.
Q: What would you say has been the best part about joining the RES?
Hands down, the best part about joining RES is the web of connections you inherit by way of support from the Corky McMillan Center for Real Estate, along with the plethora of alumni who were involved in RES while they attended college. It's incredible how any question you have or advice you want is only one email or call away at all times.
Q: What skills have you gained through your involvement in the Real Estate Society that you think will be valuable in your career?
Throughout my involvement with the Real Estate Society, in addition to copious amounts of knowledge, I have also gained a cluster of interpersonal skills that can be applied to any field of life, whether inside my career or outside.
Q: What are your career aspirations following graduation?
After graduation, I intend to continue building Dahl Capital, the company I founded as a freshman while living in South Campus Plaza. Dahl Capital focuses on multifamily real estate investments. We currently own three properties, and as of this writing, we have our fourth—our biggest acquisition yet—pending. Let’s hope that by the time this comes out, or shortly after, it's closed.
