Adapted Athletics

SMBA '25 was recently joined by Aztec Adapted Athletics where students had the privilege of learning more about the program and hearing from one of the star athletes. Program Director AJ Munoz-Bond spoke to the class about the history of Adapted Athletics, which was founded in 2016, the resources the program provides to their athletes, keys to external funding, and goals for the future of the program.

Adapted Athletics has a mission to provide an environment of support for adaptive athletes through integration of high-caliber education, coaching, and mentorship. Their multidisciplinary approach embodies the mission of the Associated Students through the combination of competitive sport, innovative research, and community engagement.

The program has three teams currently: track & field, wheelchair tennis, and the high performance division, which provides holistic support for elite-level athletes actively competing in adapted sports for which they do not have an official coach for. Sports in the high performance category include, but are not limited to, Para Powerlifting, Wheelchair basketball, Para Surfing, Para Rowing, Para Triathlon, Para Beach Volleyball, and Para Swim.

SMBA ‘25 heard from Michelle Cross, Adapted Athletics track & field athlete and first athlete in the program, who joined in 2019. Michelle, a graduate student now in her final year, shared her extensive list of accomplishments, successes, and the opportunities Adapted Athletics have helped her achieve.

Current SMBA student, Jack Stone (‘25) stated, “Working with Adapted Athletics has been nothing short of inspiring, as I have had the opportunity to work directly with athletes and program staff, gaining first hand insight into the unique needs within the field. This experience has directly connected to my academic learning within the Sports MBA program, further reinforcing my belief that corporate partnerships can play a crucial role in building a more inclusive space within sports. By conducting meaningful connections, we can break down barriers and provide adaptive athletes with the proper resources, support, and visibility. I am beyond grateful to the SDSU Sports MBA program for providing me with a unique avenue to further pursue my passion and career aspirations.”

Good luck to Michelle Cross, who will be defending the IFCPF Women’s World Cup title in Spain next month with the U.S. Women’s CP National Team (soccer)! A big thank you to AJ Munoz-Bond, Julie Schlossberg, Michelle Cross, and the entire Adapted Athletics team for their time and insight!
