When Los Angeles native, Felicia Blaylock, was trying to decide where to attend college, she asked her father for guidance. “I’ll never forget him saying ‘Go to San Diego State. It’s closer to home.’” she recalled. “I was going to SDSU and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.”

Felicia couldn’t have known it at the time, but her ties to SDSU would run far deeper than she could have imagined.

As she worked toward her management degree, her future husband was simultaneously working on his degree, though they never met on campus. Reginald Blaylock was a star offensive lineman for the Aztecs who eventually earned three SDSU degrees (’88, public administration/’06, Master of Public Administration/’10, Doctor of Education). When the two finally met, they were working professionals who had already earned their bachelor’s degrees. They married on May 28, 1994.

Felicia and Reginald had two daughters, Kyla and Brenna. In 2011, Felicia returned to SDSU to earn her teaching credential while Reginald worked as an SDSU administrator for a total of 27 years.

Like her mother, Kyla was an SDSU management major. During Kyla’s senior year, her younger sister, Brenna, enrolled as an SDSU freshman in public administration/criminal justice. Brenna’s graduation in 2023 completed the Blaylocks’ SDSU legacy with all four family members earning SDSU degrees.

In addition to both having management degrees, Kyla and Felicia share the same opinion about the most important lesson they learned at SDSU: the power of persistence.  “My San Diego State experience taught me about persistence and not to give up, even when things seem hard,” said Kyla.

Felicia concurred saying: “At SDSU, I learned that perseverance and determination are key components to obtaining your goals. You have to keep pressing on and never give up. I have continued to apply those traits at every job and in my personal life.”
