Marie Huerta, Then and Now
What has happened in your life since you left SDSU 10 years ago?
I’ve become the mother of a wonderful (and strong-willed) little girl, who teaches me curiosity and patience every day. These two skills have been very helpful in my professional career as well and have allowed me to grow tremendously since I graduated from SDSU. I began my career at Cubic Transportation Systems, and, in over nine years with them, learned the many facets of HR, from talent management, engagement, workforce planning to employee relations, and more.
Where are you working now? What is your title?
I am currently working for WD-40 Company in a human resources manager role. I support the corporate functions, which primarily include our global research and development, legal, finance and accounting, and HR teams.
What was your favorite memory from SDSU?
In 2013, I was lucky to participate in a 2-week study abroad program in Shanghai led by Dr. Cheng and Dr. Olson. Along with 12 other SDSU undergraduates, we learned about China’s culture, history, and customs.
What was the most important lesson you learned at SDSU?
Networking and building professional relationships early can make a big difference in your career. It often leads to unique job opportunities but also, and most importantly, provides great resources to help you grow, develop, and navigate the working world.
What advice would you give current SDSU business students?
Find an internship to start applying theory to practice. It’s not only great for your resume but will also help decide the field or specialty you’d like to pursue once you graduate.
