David Fischer, Then and Now
What has happened in your life since you left SDSU 10 years ago?
I started working for Petco as an intern right after graduating and worked there for almost 10 years in the IT department. I got promoted, got married, had two kids (5 and 2 years old), moved back to Ohio where I grew up, and bought and built a house.
Where are you working now? What is your title?
I work at Harbor Freight Tools, a hardware retail store. My title is manager, IT applications.
What was your favorite memory from SDSU?
One specific thing that sticks with me is going to SDSU basketball games. My dad and I split the cost of season tickets and eventually my wife started going to the games with us. My freshman year was the Kawhi Leonard team that went to the Sweet 16, eventually losing to UConn. I remember when the "I Believe" chants first started at SDSU. Hearing and being a part of The Show was one of the most incredible memories of SDSU.
What was the most important lesson you learned at SDSU?
How to research and ask the right questions. I got good grades throughout high school even without studying but during my first semester at SDSU, I learned to work hard, take the time to study and, most importantly, learn how to study. There's always room to learn and grow, but you have to put the effort in to get there.
What advice would you give current SDSU business students?
Note taking is one of the most important skills you can learn. As you start your career and take your classes, make detailed notes on the lessons and in meetings. It’s the best way to learn about the business processes and applications, and the terms used. It also endears you to your team when they need that information. You make yourself an invaluable member of the team and it helps you learn more about the company. Also, be as flexible as possible.
