World Champion Alumni & Larry O’Brien Trophy Visit Class

March 23, 2023

On Tuesday March 14, 2023, the 2023 SDSU Sports MBA cohort were invited to attend an afternoon with three of the inimitable partnerships team at the Golden State Warriors - Mike Kitts (SMBA ‘07), Dominic Lucq (SMBA ‘14) and Sean Bell (SMBA ‘17). The class had the opportunity to hear insights from the NBA's number one team on-court and off-court in the presence of the 2022 Larry O'Brien NBA Championship Trophy.

Warriors Presentation
The trio of Sports MBA alumni, who have earned a combined 8 NBA champion rings, offered insight about the Warriors' partnerships strategy and gave students the chance to ask questions about their sales and activation processes.

Some key learnings from the session:

Warriors trophy with class
- The SDSU Sports MBA program sets you up for success in all business, not just sports, as long as you apply yourself.

- There is no such thing as “sports business.” There is just good business, applied to sports.

- The way you do one thing is the way you do everything.

- The Warriors’ culture of greatness is reflected in every person in the organization.

As often occurs when alumni visit campus, students took to the podium to showcase what they've been learning in class. Students from SMBA '23 used their time with the Warriors alums wisely, giving excellent presentations on new ideas related to new partnership opportunities, reimagining existing partnerships, jersey reveals, and strategies for engaging younger fans. Mike, Dom, and Sean set the bar very high and the student presenters exceeded expectations, earning positive feedback from the alumni.

Girls with trophy
Current student Gaelen Kepics (SMBA ‘23) said of the experience, “As someone who grew up playing basketball most of my life, then worked for a tremendous collegiate basketball team and an NBA team, I had an amazing experience presenting to the best partnerships team in the NBA, if not the entire sports world.”

Thank you, above all, to Mike Kitts (SMBA '07) for organizing this visit and to his outstanding teammates Dom Lucq (SMBA '14) and Sean Bell (SMBA '17) for their passion for and ongoing commitment to the Sports MBA program. We sincerely appreciate everything they do for the program and thank them for returning to their alma mater with the Larry O'Brien trophy in tow!
