Partnerships Professional Greg Zweig (SMBA ‘12) Shares his Recipe for Success with SMBA ‘23 Cohort

Greg Zweig
Greg Zweig (SMBA ‘12), Senior Director, Corporate Partnerships at the San Diego Gulls has long been a friend of the SDSU Sports MBA program. As a graduate of the program in 2012, Greg makes it a priority to return to the class every year to offer his insights, perspectives and expertise over a number of years in the sporting industry in many capacities. In his current role with the AHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks, the San Diego Gulls, Greg leads the corporate partnerships department utilizing an attitudinal rubric that he shared with the SMBA ‘23 cohort.

As the ‘tip of the spear’ with brands in San Diego, Greg is often the first touchpoint between the San Diego Gulls and prospective partners. As a result, he is prepared, polished and humble in initiating, building and maintaining relationships. The Gulls have a reputation for being one of the leaders in the AHL in terms of ensuring that the team is part of the community, an integration in which the corporate partnerships team plays a large role. At the heart of this is being a good human, underpinned by excellence and innovation that ensures that partners receive an excellent product and, consequently, the fan engagement and experience follows suit. Whilst the Gulls have not had their most successful year on ice in 2022-2023, they are currently undergoing a rebuilding period across the entire Gulls and Ducks organizations and are looking forward to more sustained success over the coming seasons.

Greg stressed that, despite having a difficult year on-ice, the performance of the business has ensured that there is longevity in hockey operations in San Diego, with excellent support from corporate and community partners. As an extremely humble, dedicated and thoughtful person, Greg imparted his approach to business in just the same way. Influenced by his good friend and fellow Sports MBA alumnus Mike Kitts (SMBA ‘07) - EVP Global Partnerships at Golden State Warriors, Greg left us with two key phrases to ponder:

“Dig your well before you’re thirsty.”

“If you’re going to sell a million dollars, you’ve got to look a million dollars.”

With a number of current and former students employed by the San Diego Gulls already, it was exciting to hear from one of the leaders of the organization in Greg Zweig, as a testament to the hard work he put in as a Sports MBA student at SDSU and all of the years since.
