Q: What factors came into play when making the decision to go into accounting?
I came into SDSU studying general business but later switched to accounting after a great experience in Accounting 201 taught by Dr. DeBoskey. Along with Dr. DeBoskey’s teaching methods, career conversations with my mentors and peers within the Fowler Scholars Program helped me make my decision.
Landon Delgadillo, a fellow Fowler Scholar, along with my mentors helped a ton in the recruitment process. They were all extremely knowledgeable when it came to knowing what it would take to land a spot at EY and were huge in helping me prepare for talking with recruiters and eventually interviewing.
Q: Tell us a little bit about your career search and why you chose your current company.
I was drawn to the Big Four immediately and EY stood out among them when recruiting. They have a great culture and a tremendous presence on the west coast. I was lucky enough to have two internships with the firm in consecutive summers which helped me decide to go into tax over audit and has made me extremely confident in my path after graduation.
The culture there is a great fit and I have enjoyed everyone I’ve worked with. In San Diego especially, everyone has been extremely kind and helpful and I feel cared for within the firm. Additionally, I have grand ambitions and EY is the perfect place to learn from some of the best and get the experience I need to excel and continue to grow.
I’m excited that I have already made so many great connections within the firm over the course of my internships and I get to continue those going forward in a full-time role.
Q: When you’re not working or studying, how do you like to spend your free time?
I have always enjoyed playing and watching sports, which is probably my favorite thing to do outside of work and school. It provides a bit of an escape from some day-to-day things that would otherwise be on your mind and tends to bring people together.
Q: What advice do you have for SDSU students looking to maximize their experience on campus?
I would encourage everyone to get involved with at least one organization on campus as well as to find at least one mentor to help you along the way. Professors and guest speakers tend to be very knowledgeable and passionate about helping students. Do your best to take advantage of those opportunities.
Q: What advice would you give to students applying to the Fowler Scholars Program?
Take advantage of all the resources and opportunities available to you. Your only regret at the end of it all would be that you did too little with everything you’ll have access to within the program. And that can obviously apply to students outside the program as well.
