Fowler Scholars Program Student Spotlight: Connor Lamp
Connor Lamp, Class of 2026.
The Fowler Scholars Program was created to educate and prepare a select group of Fowler College of Business students for accelerated and lasting leadership roles in global business and society. Each year, the college selects a new group of freshmen from the local San Diego area to become Fowler Scholars. The students who are selected for the program have demonstrated leadership, ethical conduct, and exceptional academic and collaborative abilities.
Connor Lamp, a Class of 2026 Fowler Scholar, is a freshman majoring in Financial Services. On campus, Lamp is active with the Finance and Investment Society and is a key member of the Fowler Scholar’s social media team. Lamp discusses his first semester experience, describes what being a Fowler Scholar means to him, and more.
Q: What does it mean to you to be a Fowler Scholar?
To me, being a Fowler Scholar means to be an ethical business leader on campus. It is an honor to be a part of this program and I want to do my best to uphold the high standard that comes with being a Fowler Scholar. I’m excited to meet business leaders and learn proper business ethics.
Q: Can you describe a little bit about yourself and how/when you decided to pursue financial services as an area of study?
I have always been interested in money ever since I was a young kid. I found my passion for personal finance and wealth management over quarantine when I had more time to myself to explore what careers I may be interested in. I found that I really enjoyed learning about how to manage my personal finances and how to become financially literate. I decided to pursue a career in financial services so I could follow my passion of personal wealth management.
Q: If you’re involved in SDSU student organizations on campus or affiliated with any organizations off campus, can you share why you got involved and what your experience has been like so far?
I joined the Finance and Investment Society and it is an amazing program. They bring in extremely informative guest speakers from all different parts of the finance sphere. They also provide a plethora of resources to help strengthen your resume, build your network, and more.
Q: What experience in the Fowler Scholars Program has been the most impactful?
Lamp at Disneyland with friends.
My most impactful experience in the Fowler Scholars program has been working with my team on the social media project. After only a few weeks, I feel like I have learned to work efficiently with a team as well as take initiative to get things done when appropriate. It is very rewarding as I get to see the final product of my hard work on the Fowler social media platforms.
Q: Who inspires you and why?
Someone that inspires me is my Dad because he started off at an entry level IT job with no college degree and worked his way up to an upper management position at a large company. He showed me that you can get where you want to be by working hard and dedicating yourself to something important to you. He has always worked tirelessly to provide for our family and I hope to do the same for my family one day.
Q: What is the best advice you have received during your time at SDSU?
The best advice I have been given at SDSU so far has been to take advantage of the opportunities presented to you because you will never know what they could have become.
Q: What career aspirations do you have following your time at SDSU?
After my time at SDSU, I hope to find a job in personal wealth management, continuing to learn about this field until I can hopefully open up my own financial firm one day.
