After selling out their inaugural match at Snapdragon Stadium on September 17th, San Diego Wave FC returned to action at their new home pitch on September 30th. Once again, SDSU Sports MBA students were onsite with the club to help run activations at the bustling fan fest prior to the match.
The level of enthusiasm and engagement among fans at every Wave FC fan fest has been beneficial for the Sports MBA students to experience firsthand. In their Sports Marketing & Partnerships course with Dr. Vassilis Dalakas, students have learned about the value of partners authentically engaging fans with their brand, which is on display every match outside of Snapdragon Stadium. A wide variety of sponsors are onsite at the fan fest, and all are vying for the fans’ attention, so creative and engaging activations of their sponsorship are critical.
In their inaugural season, Wave FC have done a tremendous job building a family friendly environment that is welcoming to everyone. Current student Matt Hooper (SMBA ‘23) said of his experience with the fan fest, “The most rewarding part of my experience was helping provide a meaningful experience for fans attending the event and seeing their passion, energy, and enthusiasm.” The Sports MBA cohort has been invited back to work at fan fests for the remainder of the season, including the upcoming Wave FC home playoff match against the Chicago Red Stars.
