Summer Internship: A Day in the Life of Kaylee Ann Torio
Kaylee Ann Torio, Social Media Marketing Intern at Ascent Funding.
Marketing (IMC) Major
Hello everyone! My name is Kaylee Ann Torio and I am majoring in Marketing with a specialization in Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC). I am a transfer student from Grossmont College scheduled to finish my studies in the Fall of 2022. I decided to major in Marketing (IMC) because it allows me to combine both my analytical and creative mindset. I am currently spending my summer as a Social Media Marketing Intern at Ascent Funding!
My internship at Ascent Funding began in mid-July after applying for the position through LinkedIn. However, I first discovered Ascent through the student organization Women in Business (WIB). The talented executive board and members of WIB frequently post internship opportunities and useful resources in the organization’s Slack channel that came in handy during my internship search. As this is my first internship, I am continuously learning new skills each day through various tasks assigned to me. These tasks include running social media audits, creating graphics on Canva, and earning certifications on HubSpot that will help with future projects in paid digital advertising.
Ascent Funding is a student loan and success company that believes that “student loans should expand possibilities, not limit them.” Our 50 days of $1,000 Scholarships just recently came to an end and I am excited to help the Social Media Marketing team further develop our online community and launch new projects.
Here’s a day in the life as a remote Social Media Marketing Intern:
8:00 am - Good morning! Working remotely allows me to sleep in since there’s no need to commute to our office downtown. Although I enjoy sleeping in, I am excited to meet the Social Media Marketing team and my fellow interns in person once we make plans to return to the office! In the meantime, I roll out of bed, get ready for the day, and set my computer up before clocking in for work.
9:00 am - Time to clock in! First, I check my email and group chats for any new messages and follow up with my team. Then, I check my calendar for any meetings scheduled for the day. After catching myself up, I log into Monday.com to check for any comments left on my projects that are currently under review.
Ascent Funding Office located in Downtown San Diego.
10:00 am - This is usually the busiest part of my day. I begin this hour by making any revisions on my projects on Canva and Google Docs based on the comments my supervisors left. Once the revisions have been made, I notify my team on Monday.com, our project management software, to let them know it can move to the next step in the review process.
11:00 am - Time for my first meeting of the day! I get together with the Social Media Marketing team for our weekly check-in. During this meeting, we go over current projects I’m working on, any questions I may have, and talk about potential goals or tasks. Next, I have my Marketing Team Huddle meeting with the rest of the marketing department at 11:30 am.
12:00 pm - By noon, my meeting with the rest of the Marketing department wraps up. I check our September Social Media Content Calendar for any new tasks assigned to me. After this week’s meeting, I have been assigned to create an in-feed social media post, 1-2 Instagram stories, and have them reviewed and approved by August 19th.
1:00pm - Since my internship is part-time, I’m typically done for the day by 1:00 pm. However, I’ll be leaving for vacation soon so I decided to work a bit longer to get my tasks done ahead of time. I create my graphics on Canva after doing my research and draft the body copy in a Google Doc. Once I’m done, I input them into Monday.com to give the team plenty of time to review while I’m out of office for the next week. I then go over my agenda one last time to ensure I have completed my tasks before clocking out and grabbing myself some much needed lunch before I enjoy the rest of my day.
A part of me wishes my work days were a bit longer since I truly enjoy working on my tasks but understand that this is best, especially with the school semester coming up. I am so grateful to have managers who put my education and well-being first, ensuring I understand every task assigned to me and providing guidance when needed. Working at Ascent has taught me the importance of having a work-life balance along with developing skills that will improve myself as a digital marketer.
