Accounting Major

Hi! My name is Emily Guy and I am a rising sophomore majoring in accounting. I’m hoping to complete the Accountancy BSBA/MS (BMACC) program at SDSU following my undergraduate degree. Throughout my time at SDSU, I have been involved in Women in Business (WIB), American Marketing Association (AMA), Student Accounting Society (SAS), and the Surf Club.

This summer, I am interning in the payroll tax department at Entertainment Partners. I was connected to this internship through my mentor John C. Wills. With his mentorship, I was able to ask him for his advice on finding a summer internship while building my network and making professional goals. During one of our meetings, he thought of a fellow SDSU alumni that could help with my internship search. This is how I was introduced to Becky Harshberger who helped me land an interview at Entertainment Partners. Next thing I know, I was lucky enough to be offered the position!

I am so excited to be interning at Entertainment Partners because it is one of the most amazing companies that I have had the pleasure of getting to work at. Everyone on my team is helpful and understanding and I could not imagine a more perfect company to work for on my first internship.

Here is a day in my life as intern at Entertainment Partners:

8:30 am - To begin my virtual day, I open my computer and log onto our VPN server, Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client, so that I can access all of my company's projects. I then check my emails and accept any meetings that have come up in my inbox. Next, I begin working on my assigned projects. My intern partner, Sal Badillo, and I are given multiple projects at a time and split the work up between the two of us. I enjoy having multiple projects to work on because I can switch between them, check my emails, and respond to my managers which allows me to not get bored doing the same thing all day long.

9:30 am - I check in with my main manager, Ryan Coronel, and Sal to make sure we are doing the assignments in order of importance. We also discuss any questions or concerns we may have and reflect on how the internship is going overall. Since Sal and I work on most of our projects together, we have the opportunity to ask each other questions if Ryan is unavailable.

10:00 am - At this time, I prepare to join the Tax Huddle Meeting by checking my emails and finishing up my projects. Finishing open tasks prior to the meeting helps me get ready to give my managers my full attention. I also make sure to have a notepad ready in case there are any important things I need to write down.

11:00 am - Time for the Tax Huddle Meeting! During this meeting, I listen to my team communicate any updates or concerns they might like to bring to everyone’s attention. I also update my team about what I have been working on with Sal. This meeting typically ends at 12:00 pm.

12:00 pm - After meeting with my team, I begin working on any new assigned projects. Sal starts from the bottom of the tasks spreadsheet and I start at the top and then we meet in the middle so the work is split up evenly. Some projects require a lot of research and time while others require analytics so we split the work up evenly.

1:30 pm - Time for lunch!

2:30 pm - Once I return from my lunch, I meet with HR. This meeting allows the interns to learn more about the company and an executive member will often talk about their career choices to inspire us. Since we are getting to hear from some of the most experienced people at Entertainment Partners, we are able to ask them questions and advice to prepare for our professional career. The executives have also been kind enough to extend their contact information so we can contact them in the future!

4:00 pm - At the end of the day, I wrap up any last minute questions or emails I have received and I check in with Sal to see what he has finished. We touch base about our work for the day and communicate any last minute questions that we might have for each other as we get ready to wrap up and log off for the day. Some days I also check in with my manager before clocking out at 5:00 pm.

Since my internship is virtual, it is important to stay organized while working at home. I always start my mornings with a cup of coffee and water to stay energized and hydrated. I also make sure to walk my dogs in the morning before clocking in so I get some exercise and so that they will allow me to focus on my work. My internship at Entertainment Partners has been very valuable so far! Through my internship, I learned that you need to always save your work because if your computer dies, it will not be saved for you. I also learned that it’s important to ask questions immediately when you are confused. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to take constructive criticism.
