Alumnus Sam Dores (SMBA 09) Discusses Business Operations and Event Management with Current Students

January 25, 2022

Sports MBA alumnus Sam Dores (SMBA ‘09),  Director of Business Operations, Strategy and Development at ExtraMile Arena, joined SMBA ‘22 on Zoom last week as part of their Operations and Supply Chain Management course taught by Dr. Helio Yang.

A Vice Chair of Arena Committee for the International Association of Venue Managers, Sam offered his expertise in venue management, which relates closely to the content that SMBA ‘22 is learning in the Operations Management course. Additionally, Sam explained the details of business operations and venue management related to his experience working at ExtraMile Arena, hosting a wide variety of athletic and entertainment events. He also touched on challenges introduced to the field by COVID-19 such as staffing shortages, supply chain shortages, cancellations, and balancing mental health.

Students learned about the business model of ExtraMile Arena, which operates self-sufficiently apart from Boise State University and its athletic department, and how these types of arenas operate to maximize profitability.

Sam emphasized the importance of teamwork and collaboration and focusing on the venue’s mission and goals. He said it is important to celebrate wins with your team and surround yourself with people who push you to do and be better.

Since many in the current class are interested in venue management careers post-graduation, we hope to welcome Sam to class in San Diego for an in-person visit when classes resume on campus. Thank you, Sam!
