Every two years, SDSU Alumni presents the Alumni Awards of Distinction to alumni of San Diego State University who have made significant contributions to the university, to the San Diego community or to society at large. One graduate from each of SDSU’s seven academic colleges and the Imperial Valley campus are honored at a ceremony and presented with a statuette of Donal Hord’s iconic Aztec sculpture that is on display at SDSU’s Prospective Student Center.
This year’s recipient of the Alumni Awards of Distinction from the Fowler College of Business is Rebecca (Becky) Harshberger who earned her bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1984.

students as part of a summer internship program developed by Harshberger. She created the opportunity to provide students with real-world management training and career readiness.
Starting in 2020, Harshberger bolstered her service to SDSU by serving as the chair of the advisory board for the Fowler College of Business. As chair, she leads a board of which provides advice, expertise and advocacy to help the college advance its strategic and financial goals. The advisory board also engages and collaborates with the San Diego business community and beyond to provide opportunities for the college and its students.
Harshberger said she was inspired to join the board in 2018 after she mentored students after she became involved with the SDSU Los Angeles Regional Council (LARC). “I’d had such positive interactions with students when I was with LARC that I wanted to be more involved in ensuring students were prepared for their first job out of college,” she said.
Harshberger’s devotion to SDSU, the Fowler College of Business and its students make her Alumni Award of Distinction extremely special for her. “Being involved with students and being on the board made me realize that SDSU gave me a solid foundation to build my career,” she said. “I enjoy working with SDSU students, faculty and staff and this award is a signal that I’m on the right path.”
