Homecoming Court 2021

On November 13, San Diego State University celebrated its first in-person homecoming celebration since 2019, with 10 SDSU students as members of this year’s homecoming court. Each homecoming court member was nominated by various SDSU student organizations and selected by a team of faculty, staff and alumni based on each student nominees’ leadership, school spirit, integrity and achievement through their contributions and involvement on campus.

In 2015, SDSU adopted a non-gender-based homecoming court with homecoming royals in lieu of the traditional homecoming queen and king scenario to be inclusive of non-binary students.

Four members of the 10 members of the 2021 homecoming court are currently seniors at the Fowler College of Business. We asked them to discuss their involvement in SDSU student organizations and the local community.

I cannot imagine my SDSU experience without getting involved in student organizations or serving the community. My experiences outside the classroom have helped me grow into a more confident, compassionate, and intelligent leader! I have gained the most beautiful network of friends from joining various student organizations and for that, I am forever grateful.

I would encourage everyone at SDSU to get involved in at least one extracurricular activity that brings them joy because it truly makes the biggest difference in your college experience.

Student involvement and service are key to a successful college experience! Though my time on campus at SDSU has been short due to transferring in the midst of the pandemic, I have made the most of it by participating in student organizations, running for office, and engaging in service events that have helped me network and meet incredible people. Because of these unique experiences and memories, I will look back on my time at SDSU and be proud to be an Aztec.

Attending a campus with prideful school spirit and community oneness had always been first on my list when I began my journey of prospective universities. I knew San Diego State was the one when I visited for the first time. I felt welcomed by the students who are proud to be Aztecs and was inspired to make this university my home.

My involvements in student organizations, such as Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, Associated Students, and Rotaract of SDSU are a few ways I found my community and grew relationships with my peers. The opportunities to develop my professional skills, serve my community, and maintain deep and lasting friendships have been endless through actively contributing to my student organizations.

Involvement in student organizations and service isimportant to me because it allows me to form deeper and more genuine connections with my communities. I have been able to become friends with so many people I likely would not have if I was not as heavily involved both on and off campus.

Being a transfer student, it was so important for me to become involved because it was a way for me to find my place on campus and to make the large SDSU community feel a bit smaller. I’m so thankful for the opportunities my involvements have brought me, and I encourage everyone to find that one group on campus where they truly feel at home!

The two members of the court selected as the homecoming royals during the November 13 game between the Aztecs and the Nevada Wolfpack were history major Brenda Drew and speech, language and hearing sciences major Alexia Oduro.

At the end of the game, the Aztecs reigned victorious over the Wolfpack in a 21 – 23 nail-biter.
