Sports MBA students used the CliftonStrengths® assessment to discover their top strengths

This year, the SDSU Sports MBA program within the Fowler College of Business at San Diego State University is taking a strengths-based approach to helping students understand their unique strengths so that they can apply them in their schoolwork, internships, and beyond.

Research has shown conclusively that understanding and focusing on your strengths is one of the best possible routes to reach your potential. According to Gallup’s research, those that focus on their strengths are three times as likely to have a higher quality of life and six times as likely to be engaged in their work. Gallup’s research has also shown that a strengths-based approach improves a person’s confidence, direction, hope, and kindness towards others. Strengths-based development is a form of “positive psychology,” the study of understanding what humans do well through positivity and how they flourish.

Sports MBA students used the CliftonStrengths® assessment to discover their top strengths. The CliftonStrengths® assessment, which is grounded in more than 80 years of research, measures 34 areas of strength and produces a Top 5 Strengths Report for individuals. Students participated in a half-day workshop with strengths coach Amanda Flisher to better understand this tool and how to apply their strengths in the real world. After the sessions, students will continue to work on developing their strengths throughout the program.

The collective Top 5 CliftonStrengths® for the Sports MBA Class of 2022 were Relator, Achiever, Arranger, Analytical, and Competition. These particular five create a robust classroom environment that inspires thinking deeply and working collaboratively alongside classmates to better each other and to achieve collective milestones. The members of the cohort also possess a wide array of different strengths, which lead to a diversity of ideas, thoughts, and ways of approaching their MBA coursework. To find out more about CliftonStrengths, go to gallup.com/cliftonstrengths.
