Fall Internship: A Day in the Life of Megan Matthews
Megan Matthews, Marketing major.
Marketing Major with a Minor in Digital and Social Media Studies
Hello! My name is Megan Mathews and I am currently a junior at San Diego State University. I am majoring in Marketing and minoring in Digital and Social Media Studies. I’m a Marketing Intern at Colorescience, a company that specializes in mineral and SPF based makeup and skincare.
I started this position in August after applying through Handshake, SDSU’s Career Services recruitment tool. This internship has taught me about the managing and planning styles of digital marketing as well as the crucial adjustments that come along with working from home. With a hybrid-style work schedule, my days have some order aside from me accomplishing small tasks for my team. Tasks can range from creating graphic images for posts, to researching social media audiences and social media managing customers. On Fridays, I go into the Carlsbad office to work on shipping out packages to influencers and assisting team members with other weekly tasks. A large project I’ve been working on this fall is developing the company’s TikTok presence and creating video content to market products online!
Here’s my day in the life as a Marketing Intern at Colorescience!
8:00 am – I manage to wake up after listening to my alarm for about 5 minutes. I honestly don’t have too much trouble waking up early, but some mornings are harder than others. I then will scroll through my phone and check my tasks I need to complete for the day on my calendar.
9:00 am – I start to look through my computer to review all my accomplishments from the prior week, tasks I need to work on for the week, and any questions I have for my advisor. This is also when I will start to think about what TikTok ideas I have for the day and how they correspond to our marketing calendar.

10:00 am – Every week I have a meeting with my advisor to go over what I did the week before and any projects she wants me to tackle.
11:00 am – Now I finally get a 30-minute break to make some lunch. My go-to lately has been some sort of taco or Greek salad. Follow my food Instagram to see what I like to make at school! @megs__eats
12:00 pm – Now my favorite time of the day: TikTok! Around this time is where I will usually film, edit, and post a TikTok based on our weekly events, product releases, or holidays. My favorite part about this is the fact that I get to use my creative outlook to find new ways to promote products.
1:00 pm – After I post on TikTok, I will usually do some social media managing. This often consists of me answering comments, commenting on influencer posts, reposting stories, and answering direct messages that are filled with questions about products or shipping.
2:00 pm – 5:00 pm – Finally, the afternoon is when I will work on any research I need to do, pertaining to socials, customer questions, or any projects assigned to me. I will also have occasional meetings with team members on Zoom to discuss any questions on projects or to report any research.
Although my internship is mostly remote, I have learned to love the time management and planning qualities that I have learned. I love the opportunities this internship has brought me. I can’t wait to take what I have learned and use the information in the classroom or at work. My future in marketing and the world of business will forever be impacted by this company. It has validated my love for people, my eagerness for success and accomplishment, as well as my creative skills used in my work.
My biggest tip for those who want to gain hands-on experience and get the most out of learning what your major holds is to get an internship! No matter how big or small of a company it is, every business holds so many takeaways from people who have experienced the world of business first hand. Having an internship allowed me to feel confident in my field as I work to obtain my degree.
