Long-Time SDSU Professor Honored with Associations Highest Award
San Diego State University finance professor emeritus, Thomas Warschauer, has been named as the recipient of the 2021 P. Kemp Fain Jr. Award by the Financial Planning Association® (FPA). The P. Kemp Fain Jr. Award is the association’s highest honor. The award is presented annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to the advancement of the financial planning profession and has a record of outstanding achievements in service to society, academia, government and professional activities.
Thomas M.D. Warschauer, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Finance Department
Warschauer, who began teaching at SDSU’s Fowler College of Business in 1977, served as the founder and director of the college’s financial planning program and still teaches at SDSU as a retired annuitant. He has been responsible for the publication of hundreds of research articles, book chapters, presentations and panel discussion appearances focused on financial planning topics. He is the namesake of the Dr. Thomas Warschauer Endowed Professor of Finance at SDSU.
In addition, Warschauer also helped to establish the FPA’s Journal of Financial Planning, and is the co-founder and first president of the Academy of Financial Services. He has also been the recipient of the FPA’s National Leadership Award in 2012 and the association’s Montgomery-Warschauer Award was named in his honor.
“Tom Warschauer’s extensive service to the financial planning profession, his students, the Fowler College of Business and SDSU are nearly unmatched in terms of dedication and academic knowledge,” said George Belch, the Thomas and Evelyn Page Dean (interim) of SDSU’s Fowler College of Business. “He has played an important role in the academic and professional lives of many of the region’s financial professionals and has been a tireless leader in advocating for financial literacy programs, as well as the advancement of the financial planning and services industries. He is more than deserving of this highly prized national award.”

Warschauer will be presented with the award during an upcoming in-person FPA event in 2022.
