Katie Carozza, Marketing (IMC) major.

Hello! My name is Katie Carozza and this fall will be my senior year at San Diego State University. I chose to major in Marketing, specializing in Integrated Marketing Communications and minoring in Art, with an emphasis in Photography. I’m an intern for the Fowler College of Business as a Student Marketing Assistant.

I started in this position at the beginning of 2021 after applying through Handshake. It’s taught me professional workflow and how to produce respectable work. There’s so much encouragement and teaching from the Fowler marketing team. My days are anything but normal. Tasks can range from creating an infographic, editing videos, and posting to the Fowler College of Business website. A large project I’ve been working on this summer is helping transfer information to a new website template for SDSU.

Here’s a day in the life as a Student Marketing Assistant!

7:00 am - I finally managed to wake up after a series of 3 loud alarms. Mornings are my favorite time of day and often where I find myself most creative and productive. I release some endorphins by working out. Exercise has always been the key to setting the tone for my day. It clears my mind before I start work.

8:00 am - This is the calmest hour of my day. I get ready for work by finding a spot to sprawl out my planner, notebook, and computer. I also make my first cup of coffee for the day. Two cups of coffee a day is usually the average, cream with no sugar.

9:00 am - Time to start. I open my computer and check through my chat rooms to see if there’s any new short term assignments. Today I didn’t have any new website updates or info sheets so I dove right into preparing a presentation for my meeting at noon. I’ll be meeting with Darrien Boling, the Graphic Design and Digital Specialist here at Fowler.

10:00 am - My presentation is ready so before the meeting, I’ll go back to working on the new template. In order to better the user experience university wide, the colleges are all working towards launching a new look for their websites. In order to do this, all the content from their current websites must be manually brought over to the site. While tedious, these types of projects are my favorite. They teach me how to navigate large websites and require creative problem solving.

11:30 am - I grab my second cup of coffee and set up for my meeting. Since I have a large volume of information to communicate, I’ll open up my necessary tabs for screen share beforehand.

12:00 pm - Hop onto my zoom call! I present my progress to Darrien and we go over what the next steps for this project will be. I’ve only ever met the marketing team over Zoom because the university campus has been closed, but this fall we’ll be right back on campus!

1:00 pm - The meeting ends and I go over the changes we discussed. Then it’s right back into editing the new template.

2:00 pm - My job is part-time. By 2pm, it’s my time to log off.

Honestly, I struggle not to just open up my laptop and keep working in my free time. I love the work that I do and I’m so thankful for all that I’ve learned. My future in marketing will forever be impacted by the people and work that Fowler has introduced me to. I didn’t know that all the passions and hobbies I’ve picked up in my life could be so applicable to a specific profession, but this internship has given me hope for the future.
