The Fowler College of Business’ student organizations have continued to operate effectively, host professional events, and engage with the community through virtual platforms, despite the challenges brought on by the pandemic. During San Diego State University’s Fall 2020 semester, the Association of Latino Professionals For America (ALPFA) hosted weekly virtual meetings with reputable firms in order for members to network with professionals who offer valuable career advice and job opportunities. Steven Lemus Garcia (Senior, Accounting) President of ALPFA, describes how the organization has adapted to the virtual environment, discusses why students should join, and how ALPFA has impacted his leadership experience. Garcia also describes why he loves SDSU while offering advice to current students.

About Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA):

Q: What events, gatherings, and activities does your organization host?

ALPFA hosts weekly meetings with reputable firms so our members can have an opportunity to network with professionals that will aid them in their future. ALPFA and SAS are also aiding BAP in hosting the Meet the Firms event in February.

Q: What virtual events has your organization organized since the pandemic began?

We have transitioned our meetings virtually, networking virtual events with reputable firms such as the Big 4, and virtual workshops that will aid our members.

Q: How does ALPFA connect with the community outside of SDSU?

ALPFA is actually currently working on a project to host a meeting specifically for Community College students so for when they do transfer, especially to SDSU, they will be better prepared. We would also do community clean-ups, but given the situation we’re in, it’s not possible right now.

Q: Why should students join ALPFA?

ALPFA is a tight-knit group of individuals that strive for success. We will also teach you valuable lessons and connections that are applicable even after graduating as an Aztec.

Q: How can a student get involved with ALPFA?

There is an application on our website, https://sdsualpfa.org/, which is also the same webpage where you can pay your membership dues. We technically have recruitment throughout the semester, but if you want to get the most out of the organization, such as Meet The Firms, you’d want to apply and join by February 9th.

Q & A with the Association of Latino Professionals for America President, Steven Lemus Garcia

Name: Steven Lemus Garcia

Major (and minor):  Accounting

Campus affiliations / organizations: ALPFA

Q: As a student leader involved with an organization at SDSU, can you share why you got involved and what your experience has been like so far?

I got involved because back when I was at community college, I was just one of the many students that would go to class and go home. When I transferred over to SDSU, I wanted to make my university experience meaningful and grow outside of the classroom. I initially joined the organization for those reasons. But I didn’t think along the way I would make life-long friendships, develop important networking skills & connections, polish my leadership skills, and have fun.

Q: What experience with your organization has been the most impactful?

Garcia loves attending San Diego Aztec Basketball home games (this photo was taken during the season they were 30-2).

It’s still an early semester, but I would have to say being the chapter president of ALPFA. Just taking on the leadership role is a lot of responsibility, not to mention having to adapt to a virtual environment to make sure the organization is still thriving for its members.

Q: What has been your favorite SDSU memory so far?

Going to the football and basketball games hands down. It's an electrifying experience that I’ve always wanted to be a part of since I was a child born and raised in San Diego. #GoAztecs

Q: If you could go back to your freshman year, what advice would you give yourself?

Well, when I was a freshman, I was at San Diego City College. But I would tell myself not to stress out you were initially rejected from SDSU, because down the line you’ll be able to transfer to your dream school as long as you keep working hard and push forward..

Q: What is the best advice you have received during your time at SDSU?

In joining an organization, the adventure is a lot more fun with friends.

Q: What career aspirations do you have following your time at SDSU?

I’ve been inspired to join the Bmacc program and even attain my CPA license after.
