The Fowler College of Business’ student organizations have continued to operate effectively, host professional events, and engage with the community through virtual platforms, despite the challenges brought on by the pandemic. During San Diego State University’s Spring 2020 and Fall 2020 semesters, the TAMID Group at SDSU (TAMID) hosted weekly meetings which featured guest speakers from various industries and organized professional networking events for its members. Chris Abbott (Junior, Environmental Science) President of TAMID, describes what TAMID is all about, why students should join, and how TAMID has impacted his leadership experience. Abbott also describes his career plans while offering advice to current SDSU students.

About TAMID Group at SDSU (TAMID):

Goal/Objective of TAMID:

Students are given the opportunity to work directly with a wide range of Israeli companies. Members gain valuable experience through consulting and investing.

Q: What events, gatherings, and activities does your organization host?

Our organization has weekly meetings where we work on professional development and presentation skills. Our members participate in different public speaking activities to hone their skills and get to know each other.

Q: What virtual events has your organization organized since the pandemic began?

We have hosted several guest speakers from various industries and organized professional networking events for our members. For this upcoming semester we plan on having a Q & A event with a panel of business owners and professionals. We will also be hosting a resume workshop and other professional development workshops.

Q: How does TAMID connect with the community outside of SDSU?

Outreach is incredibly important to us and regardless of only being on campus for two semesters we have successfully networked with a wide range of professionals. We also have a vast network of TAMID Group alumni all over the country.

Q: Why should students join TAMID?

TAMID provides students with a unique opportunity that cannot be found anywhere else on campus. Our members gain extremely valuable experience by working with CEOs and are given the chance to flourish in various leadership positions. There is an important role for everyone in our organization whether it is leading a consulting team, creating a stock portfolio, or working on our executive board. Some people can even attest to getting an internship or job offer simply because of their involvement with TAMID.

Q: How can a student get involved with TAMID?

Our application for recruitment is now open until February 3rd, 2021. Students can visit our social media @tamid.sdsu (Instagram and Facebook) or our website at tamidatsdsu.com to apply.

Q: As a student leader involved with an organization at SDSU, can you share why you got involved and what your experience has been like so far?

I took on this role because of the passion that I have for TAMID. I believe that this organization has the potential to do great things in the future and I am so excited to build a culture of excellence. My experience so far has been amazing, and our talented executive board has made my transition completely seamless. I have really enjoyed being involved on campus over the past three years and I am so thankful for all of the important friendships that I have made.

Q: What experience with your organization has been the most impactful?

Working on our project teams has definitely had a profound impact on me. Being able to provide support and ideas to different companies has been a new experience for me. I feel as if my critical thinking and public speaking skills have improved dramatically.

Q: What has been your favorite SDSU memory so far?

Living in the AEPi chapter house has been one of my favorite SDSU memories. I love all of my roommates and I am so grateful that I have had the opportunity to spend two years of college there.

Q: If you could go back to your freshman year, what advice would you give yourself?

Appreciate every single moment of this time because you never know what the future holds.

Q: What is the best advice you have received during your time at SDSU?

Pay attention in school but pay more attention to those around you. I feel as if I have learned more from my peers and professors outside of the classroom than in it. Doing well in school is obviously important but it means more than simply having a high GPA.

Q: What career aspirations do you have following your time at SDSU?

I plan to attend law school and become an environmental lawyer. This is a very important field and I hope to have a positive impact on my community.
