“It was too close to home.”
That is why San Diego native, Christian Onwuka, looked at many other colleges before deciding to attend San Diego State.
But attending a couple of SDSU’s campus events during his senior year of high school changed his mind. “I saw the diversity on campus and in the programs where I wanted to participate as an undergraduate,” said Onwuka. “Additionally, I earned a Presidential Scholarship from SDSU which removed a huge financial burden for me and my family.”
In addition to being a Presidential Scholar, Onwuka has also been recognized with SDSU’s prestigious Quest for the Best award which honors the university’s most outstanding undergraduates. Each student winner is allowed to honor a faculty or staff member at the awards event and Onwuka chose Dr. Sandra Cook, associate vice president for enrollment management, as his honoree. He met Cook when she introduced herself to him as the head of the Presidential Scholarship committee who reviewed his application during his freshman orientation. “Since then, she has been a source of advice and motivation,” said Onwuka.
When he earns his finance degree from SDSU in the spring of 2019, Onwuka plans to participate in Stanford University’s Knights-Hennessy Scholars program as he earns his MBA in finance. After that he as “the penultimate goal of conquering Corporate America and becoming CEO of a Fortune 500 business.”
