SMBA ’26 Visits Callaway Golf Headquarters in Carlsbad

The Sports MBA Class of 2026 recently visited Callaway Golf Headquarters in Carlsbad, where students gained a behind-the-scenes look at how one of the industry’s broadest golf product ranges is designed, built, and brought to market. The day highlighted the company’s focus on innovation and global reach, as well as the importance of human connection in driving business success.
Students heard from four Callaway leaders, each reflecting on their career journeys and lessons learned. Jason Finley and Austin Tudor shared how they began in entry-level roles, product testing and customer service respectively, and used the insights gained there to inform their work as they advanced. Their stories illustrated how understanding the foundations of a business can provide a powerful perspective for success. Zack Oakley discussed the importance of aligning products with brand values and target audiences. Alexis Eader offered a look into Callaway’s content strategy, showcasing their innovative studio, early adoption of live broadcasting with Callaway Live, and the company’s strong partnerships with professional players and influencers.
A central theme throughout the day was the value of connections. Each leader emphasized that relationships, both inside and outside the organization, are key to growth and opportunity in the sports industry.
The visit wrapped up with a reminder from Callaway that extends beyond business: never forget Rule 35. While golf has 34 official rules, The Callaway Rule 35 serves as a simple but enduring message: enjoy the game!
A huge thank you to Jason, Zack, Austin, Alexis, and the entire Callaway team for their time, insight, and hospitality. Their stories offered the SMBA ’26 class a clear look at how innovation, strategy, and human connection intersect in the world of sports business.
