Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union at San Diego State University served as the backdrop for this year’s Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) California HR Student Case Competition where 21 student teams from 10 California-based schools offered their solutions to a real-world HR issue.

The objective of the SHRM California HR Student Case Competition is to provide students with realistic HR challenges to promote ethical decision-making, and strong communication and presentation skills.

SDSU’s Fowler College of Business served as the host school and co-sponsor of the competition, where both graduate and undergraduate students presented their proposed resolutions to HR professionals from across the state who served as competition judges.

Cal Poly Pomona (undergraduate) and the University of Southern California (graduate) earned first place recognition in their respective divisions. SDSU had a team place second in the undergraduate division.

Fowler management professor Michelle Dean has served as SHRM SDSU’s faculty advisor since the chapter’s inception in 2010. The chapter has been participating in the annual HR Case Competition since 2014 and this was their first time hosting the event, which required a year of advance planning and was lead by SHRM SDSU officers, Tamar Hazon, Leann David, and Jorge Cortez.
