As we wrap up the 2018-19 academic year and my first year as Department Chair, I want to take a moment to share, celebrate, and reflect on the many accomplishments of the Management Department, students, and faculty.  With input from our Advisory Board, we engaged in significant review of our General Management major, envisioning a professionalism and career management component in our required internship course.  Our nationally recognized entrepreneurship specialization is also under review, with a focus on further integrating the curriculum with the co-curricular and hands-on activities offered by the Zip Launch Pad and the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center, named by the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers as the 2018 NASDAQ Center of Entrepreneurial Excellence.  We will also be offering a new HR analytics course during the upcoming year for students specializing in human resource management.

We had an exciting opportunity this year to collaborate with WD-40 to host their global HR team at SDSU for an evening of interaction with our HR students, with CEO Garry Ridge leading and facilitating discussions. Our students greatly valued this unique chance to socialize, network, and engage in conversations with WD’s global team.

Anya Stutovska, Management ’19 and Fowler Scholar

Congratulations to Outstanding Management Student, Nora Glaser, who was also the valedictorian of the Fowler College class of 2019! Nora has accepted a full-time position with Kaiser.  I also want to applaud Anya Shutovska, a General Management major and Fowler Scholar, selected to participate in the Capital Fellows Program, which is highly selective and fully funded, as one of 18 to be a California Senate Fellow.  The SHRM HR case competition team (Alexis Conde; Vanessa Hernandez; and Danilo Urquia) took first place in 2018 CalSHRM Student Summit and Case Competition, adding to the SHRM chapter’s many accolades.  I wish our graduating management students many successes as they assume leadership roles in business and society.  Please connect with us on LinkedIn, share your accomplishments and growth, and encourage your fellow Management majors to do the same.

Kudos to our internationally recognized and committed faculty who received many teaching and research honors this year from the college and professional organizations: Fowler Teaching Awards; Fowler Research Award; Allen Baily Service Award, Influential Faculty Award; Quest for the Best Award; finalist for dissertation awards and best papers, among others listed below.

Again, I am proud of our many accomplishments and look forward to another productive year ahead!
