Ashley White – BeerNerdz

SDSU College of Business alumnus, Ashley White (’09, finance) and her brother-in-law and fellow Aztec, Eric Barajas (’97, kinesiology) co-founded BeerNerdz in 2011 because “we both have a competitive spirit combined with a passion for the San Diego craft beer community.”

At a BeerNerdz event, each guest is given a note card with detailed information about eight different craft brews available for tasting. In a blind taste test, the beer drinkers must match the information on the score card with the corresponding beer. “BeerNerdz events are not meant to be serious, but rather add an element of friendly competition and socialization to beer drinking,” said White, a San Diego native. “It’s a great opportunity to expose yourself to many of the different breweries in San Diego and sample some of the amazing beer being produced.”

White, who chose to attend SDSU because “it seemed like a good fit overall and had a fabulous reputation for its business program,” explained that she and Barajas plan to examine avenues of expansion for the game. “We plan to explore opportunities to bring this concept to the corporate world, as well as increasing the collaboration with individual breweries to feature their seasonal and special release offerings to more craft beer enthusiasts.”

White’s enjoyment of craft beer has led to a fun and lucrative business and she advises budding entrepreneurs to follow her lead. “Be patient, don’t give up, and never be afraid to pursue your passions,” she said. “We are at work the majority of the day and it will certainly add to the quality of your life if you are able to do something you are passionate about.”
