Top on the Court, Top in the Classroom: KRISTIN BUTH
San Diego State MBA student and tennis star, Kristin Buth, was recently named SDSU’s top female scholar-athlete for 2015.
The native of Kaiserslautern, Germany earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from SDSU and is expected to earn her MBA in the spring of 2016. She has maintained a cumulative 3.60 GPA and has been named has been named a scholar-athlete each semester she has been enrolled at SDSU.
Buth started playing tennis at the age of six when she took her first trial lessons in elementary school and soon after, she took private lessons at a local club.
As a teenager, she began looking at universities where she could continue to pursue her passion for the sport. She contacted another German-born SDSU tennis player, Julia Wais (’13, marketing) about her experience at the university. “She told me how happy she was at SDSU, so I contacted head coach Peter Mattera,” said Buth. “He invited me for an official visit and after the visit, I knew I wanted to go to SDSU. The coaches, the team, the school, the city, the weather and everything else was a fit and I am so happy I made the right decision.”
Buth chose to pursue a journalism degree at SDSU because "I did internships at several TV stations and really enjoyed it." But since she had a year of eligibility left on the tennis team, she followed up her journalism degree with an MBA. Eventually, she hopes to establish her own athletic recruitment agency.
Buth offers this advice to younger student athletes: “Work hard and enjoy the time that you have as a student athlete. You’ll never get those opportunities again!
